New Study: Transcendental Meditation technique reduces stress in the workplaces; Increases focuses,
clarity, energy for entire
management team
A study of stress in the workplace highlighted research on the effects of the
Transcendental Meditation technique
on corporate managers. Conducted by the University of Stockholm’s Department of Business
Administration, the study found
that managers who practiced the Transcendental Meditation program displayed increased energy and
alertness, more holistic
thinking, and better decision-making capabilities.
The study, conducted in 1990, followed two teams of top business managers. They examined the short-
term effects on both teams
over a course of four to seven months, and also continued to observe the long-term effects on one team
for two to three years.
According to the article, the study found that the increased focus, clarity, and energy of those
practicing the Transcendental
Meditation technique affected the entire management team, even those not practicing the technique. The
group as a whole became
more dynamic, able to take on greater demands and rise to new levels of leadership.
They also found improved relations among members of the management teams. These improvements in the
quality of
relationships extended outside the workplace and benefited family relations as well.
The article reported that: ‘Corporate stress management is a key issue these days. NASA, IBM,
Nokia, Stanford, or the US
Army abroad or Infosys, Wipro, and most of the big companies in India are providing corporate stress
management training through
meditation and other means to keep the managers and other employees productive, to help them become
successful leaders, and
attain self-mastery, focus, and ability to work effectively with others.’
New Study Shows Transcendental Meditation Program Lengthens Life Span
A research study published in the American Journal of Cardiology has shown
that the practice of the
Transcendental Meditation program leads to improved health in many categories, including reduction of
high blood pressure, and
leads to increased lifespan.
The study, demonstrating that the practice of the Transcendental Meditation program reduced the death
rate among the elderly
and promoted longevity, was based on the health statistics over an 18-year period of a group of 203
individuals with high blood
pressure, who had an average age of 71 years.
Some participants were taught the Transcendental Meditation program; those in the control group were
taught different modalities
such as muscle relaxation or behavioral programs.
According to the article: ‘The Transcendental Meditation group had a 23 per cent reduction in
death from all causes, a 30
per cent reduction in deaths from cardiovascular diseases, and a 49 per cent reduction in the death rate
from cancer.’
It was deduced that the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique, which reduces risk
factors for high blood pressure,
high cholesterol, stroke, and hardening of the arteries, can lead to a longer and healthier life for
individuals.
